Why is this medication prescribed?
Famotidine is in a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists. It works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces.
Famotidine is indicated for the prevention and relief of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach. It is also indicated for the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers, esophagitis and heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, for pathological hypersecretory conditions, and for the maintenance of healed duodenal ulcers.
It is commonly marketed by Merck under the trade names Pepcidine® and Pepcid®.
